The Confidence to Walk Away

The Day I Walked Away From the Table

A few years ago, I was deep in a project that meant everything to me. I had built a charity from the ground up no budget, no blueprint, just heart, vision, and relentless commitment. For six years, I poured myself into it. We had the metrics, the community impact, the stories. We had proof that we were changing lives.

And then one day, in a boardroom full of people I thought were allies, one of the former board members—a powerful, influential voice—looked me dead in the eye and said:

“It really doesn’t matter what metrics you’ve built. None of it means anything if you’re not transforming lives.”

It landed like a slap. The kind that stings for days, not minutes.

It didn’t matter how much we had achieved. The strategy, the systems, the sweat, I was being dismissed in a single sentence. As if my efforts were empty because they didn’t fit someone else’s definition of “impact.”

In that moment, I realized something painful but freeing,

This wasn’t a room that valued my leadership.

And no matter how hard I worked, I would always be seen through the wrong lens here.

So I stood up and I walked away.

Walking Away Takes Confidence But Not the Kind You Think

Here’s what no one tells you, the kind of confidence that makes headlines is the loud, polished, glossy kind.

But the real confidence? It’s quiet. It’s personal. And it often shows up in moments when you’re trembling inside but choosing yourself anyway.

Walking away from that table wasn’t a resignation. It was a reclamation—of my energy, my voice, my value.

That’s the kind of confidence I want more women to know they’re allowed to have.

The kind that says, “If this room can’t handle my light, I’ll find (or build) one that can.”
