You know how airport security scans you like you might be hiding a water bottle in your bra?
That’s exactly how I used to look at my reflection.
Morning routine would look something like this.
Step out of the shower, catch a glimpse in the mirror, and immediately start searching for something to “fix.”
Wrinkle by the eye? Check.
Bit of puff under the chin? Check.
Slight uneven tone from forgetting SPF that one afternoon? Check.
It was like I had been hired by some imaginary “Flaw Enforcement Agency” to track down every single imperfection.
The problem? When you look for flaws, you’ll always find them and once you do, you can’t unsee them. They become the headline of your day, even if no one else notices them at all.
I remember one day I had a presentation to give. My skin was doing fine, but that morning I spotted a faint breakout on my jawline. Guess what my brain focused on for the next four hours?
Yep. Not the fact that my outfit looked great or that I’d prepped for days just the stupid breakout.
So I started trying something new, scanning for proof I’m doing something right instead.
Instead of “Ugh, another line,” it’s: “Hey, my skin looks hydrated today.
”Instead of “What’s with this puffy eye?” it’s “Wow, my under-eyes used to be worse before I started sleeping more.
”Instead of “Why do I look tired?” it’s “I’m allowed to be tired I’m out here living a whole life.”
It’s not about ignoring what’s real it’s about shifting the way you see yourself so you can actually enjoy being you.
Try This Tonight
Next time you look in the mirror, force yourself to name three good things you see even if you feel silly.
If you catch your brain scanning for flaws, pause and say, “We don’t do TSA here.”
Remind yourself that how you feel about yourself is more noticeable than any tiny ‘imperfection.’
Mini Affirmations for the Week
My skin tells my story — and I like that story.
I choose to notice what’s right instead of what’s wrong.
Confidence is the best thing I put on my face.
